A Traditional Background

Miyagawa Landscapes (formerly Miyagawa Teien) was established in Kyoto, Japan in 2003 and relocated to the east coast of Australia in 2013.

The Director, Kan Miyagawa, was born and raised in Japan by an artistic family with an international outlook.  He has dedicated himself to work in this field since 1998.  After relocating to Australia as a permanent resident, he is now actively working from his new home base in Byron Bay.  Kan is constantly exploring innovative ways to design, create and maintain harmony between natural materials and the environment with integrity and authenticity.

The Miyagawa Landscapes team have a respected reputation in Kyoto and beyond; they consult, design and create new works, plus do ongoing garden management work including shaping and maintenance.  Though the core of their work in Japan has always been landscaping and pruning for sacred spaces, like temple gardens and courtyards (tsuboniwa), they have completed diverse projects of various scales and styles.  A small selection of these have been included in the portfolio gallery.

Private gardens  •  Public gardens  •  Shops, cafes, restaurants

Honouring each site’s foundation ground and incorporating borrowed landscapes (shakkei) is paramount to the creative visioning upheld by Miyagawa Landscapes.

With respect for the inherent nature of the living materials being used, such as plants, rocks, soil, land, water, air and the sun, conversations are built between various elements throughout the design implementation and evolutionary process.

"We use traditional skills, techniques and aesthetics central to the heart of Japanese landscape design, consciously considering our choice of materials and creating with a view to longevity."

To create an authentic Japanese garden in conjunction with a traditional architectural structure, a variety of specialists are required to implement the master plan.  Called shokunin, these include skilled professionals in carpentry, roof-tiling, plumbing, mudwall construction, plastering, bamboo, metalwork, interior finishing, stonework, earthworks, planting & pruning.

Miyagawa Landscapes have done a substantial number of collaborations with architects on new builds and renovations.  They always strive to ensure their work harmonises with pre-existing or planned architectural elements sharing the land.

"Our creations are seasonally sensitive landscapes in which all facets can live together comfortably and breath organically as one. The elements are honoured and respected.

These gardens for relaxation and contemplation incorporate all the classic features expected of quality Japanese design. They bring peace and beauty to people's lives.

Along with maintenance of some of Kyoto and surrounds’ ancient public and private gardens, we have always done our best to bring purely original works into being, new contemporary spaces based on gardens of the great masters where we trained and work. "
